Chirps

Logo Application

Chirps is a made-up language learning app concept of mine. To showcase what Chirps is/could be, I designed a logo based on language and communication elements.Making up the logo are two birds shaped like speech bubbles that appear to be "Chirp" ing at each other Surrounding the two birds is an outline/impression of a tree which traditionally represents learning & knowledge.

Word Pairings:

A Typographic Exploration

Word Pairings is a new term but certainly not a new concept to me. Word pairings are phrases we have all grown up unconsciously repeating and relating to one another. PB & J is a favorite of mine; you think of peanut butter-you think of jelly and vice versa. While exploring these phrases I found an interesting struggle between making a phrase cohesive and letting each word shine on its own.

Behind the art

Jenna

Graphic Designer/Illustrator

Hello! My name is Jenna "JJ" Johnson. I am a part-time daydream believer and full-time freelance designer based in Charlotte, NC.Recently I've had the opportunity to join the city's Makerspace and collaborate with other local artists. Earlier last year, I interned at Alfred State's Bandwagon organization as their graphic artist, where I had the pleasure of working on promotional material for the school, its clubs, and other related organizations. Soon after, I graduated with a BS in Digital Media & Animation and a Minor in Graphic Design.I'm a lifelong learner and a true believer in the phrase "work smarter, not harder" - energy is a precious thing, why waste it.

Slice of Life

The Little moments

In the long run, it's the little things that matter. They're the brightest moments & the most special, they stick with you even if you don't know why.Bonding at Mom's Salon - is those little moments with your loved ones that may seem mundane and even routine, but are irreplaceable.Just Before the Win - envelopes that fleeting moment before a big event. It's a little moment that is so fast but means so much.Little moments are our treasures; they are the journey of life's biggest events.

Food Memories

Thai Food icons

A core memory of my childhood was going to our local Thai restaurant. They were one of my dad's customers and one day he brought my sister and I there for a meal. Being picky 5-year-olds who had only known American food we weren't interested in any of the Thai dishes, but one stood out to us....Mango Sticky Rice! or as I used to call it sticky mango rice (whoops). I don't remember how or why we tried it (maybe since it's a desert?) but after our first meal mango sticky rice became our staple for years, So much so that the owners knew our order by heart and were always happy to see us.It was always a special day when going to the Thai restaurant, whether for a post-recital celebration or a rare outing after a long school day. We were growing, conversing, eating, and laughing. The day came when I ventured into new areas of Thai cuisine. The owners were sure surprised that day when I didn't order my usual, but their smiles were as warm and inviting as their food was :)

Architectural Texture

texture & Gradient exploration

Architecture is often seen as rigid and clean, so why not mess it up a bit! I wanted to place these architectural renderings in their own atmospheres.Zen Solitude - it may feel empty, but it's also cozy and calm. You're in your own world as you sip on your morning coffee and glance over your koi pond on a cool Japanese morning.Lighthouse Village - is bright, but a bit lonely. It's gritty like a salty breeze and has an eerie feeling of a cold quiet night on the cusp of dawn. Who knows what's out there, but were safe in our houses right?

Motion Graphics

Don't tell me, Show me

HL - Explainer Vid

I've had a long journey of using language-learning apps in an attempt to learn a new language. Some were more succesful than others, but I haven't come across any that encompass everything I need to learn a language. So I started thinking what would an all encompassing language learning app look like? And thus the Hello Language app idea was birthed. This is an explainer video I created to highlight some features I'd like to be included if this app was to ever became a reality.

Lava Lamp

What would it feel like to swim between the blobs in a Lava lamp?In After Effects I explored how the blobs would wobble slightly with the movement of heat and how as you move pass them they come in and out of focus.

Liquid Eye

You know those short animations at the beginning of movies showcasing the different companies that had a hand in creating the film? Well, I thought I'd try out my own miny animation for a fake production company.I would name it Liquid Eye Productions or maybe Liquid Eye Studios. What do you think? could this be a believable company plugin for a movie?

Shape & Sound

Sound and shape are the 2 pillars of animation. One without the other feels like half of the picture.Try watching this video twice, once with sound and once without and see which captures your attention more. Also, try once closing your eyes to see how your experience changes.

Character design

A good story begins with a great character

Bullfrog aka "Bog"

Meet Bog! A recluse of the swamp whose only friends are the animals that reside there. She grew up in the swamp hardly around any people making her social skills and hygiene questionable at best. Her demeanor seems shy and reserved, but in reality, she's just mimicking the behaviors of her animal friends. Bog has no sense of embarrassment or cringe, so she boldly acts out her unusual mannerisms around people she meets. Leading them confused but amused. With this OC I took on the challenge of creating a 3D model to use as a reference for a 2D animated walk cycle I placed her in.

Swamp Walk

Mascot Design

A mysterious Alien Motorist and a Butler Cat!? Are they from the same universe?..... Probably... not.
Does that stop them?..... Sure doesn't!
These 2 questionable figures get up to all kinds of mischief disguised behind their cute features and stylish looks.
